Entertaining – Part 1

“Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.”

-Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

A little party can be such fun! We know that what lies at the center of hosting involves more than merely sharing a meal, but sharing our hearts…

When it comes right down to it, though, we can feel overwhelmed with the details of how to do it well, how to do it affordably, and how to do it without losing every last hair on our head.

While there are those who have a particular knack for hosting, it is an art that we all can discover. And whether your event involves porcelain or paper plates, here are a few helpful tips:

1. Keep the important things simple (such as the main course and amount of food) and fill in with lovely details as you have time. This way the fancy little extras can be fun and not overwhelming.

2. Let people bring food. Be specific if you have something in mind! People want to help.

3. Once you’ve gotten ready, wear an apron (for ours, click here ) so you can keep prepping food without risk to your outfit.

4. If some guests don’t know each other, think of interesting and/or complementary introductions to make starting a conversation easy for them. (“This is Sarah, she just got back from a trip to Switzerland and is amazing at baking”)

5. Remember that you are what makes your home a welcoming place. You don’t have to impress people but rather, welcome others into your home, showing gratitude for what you have and in turn sharing it with your guests.

Oh, and be sure to enjoy yourself! At some point during the party, sit and make yourself comfortable. Your guests will feel more relaxed that way, and your feet will thank you, too.

What is your favorite way to entertain?

One thing I love to do is collect flowers and greenery from my yard for fresh arrangements throughout my home, even the restrooms. I also like to use a chalkboard at the entrance of our home with a greeting and sometimes a little sketch! I’ve used scrabble tiles on tables to leave little messages depending on the event. Most of all I want to greet my guests with a smile and a hug! The table or tables are set with the intention that no matter where you sit you will feel your seat is uniquely special to you! Even leaving a treat now and then as a party favor is fun.
